Meat: a high intake promote depression

For his pro-inflammatory character, the meat would increase by 20% the risk of depression.

If it is known that genetics, lifestyle and home environment predispose to depression, they are not the only factors. A new major study published in August in the journal British Journal of Nutrition , confirms that our eating habits directly influence our mental health. A large consumption of meat and refined grains promote depression .

US and Australian researchers wanted to study the link between a pro-inflammatory diet and the risk of depression. To do this, they analyzed the power operation of more than 6,000 Australian women (1) an average age of 52 years who participated in a large health survey ( Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health ). These were followed for twelve years, from 2001 to 2013.

20% greater chance of suffering from depression

Based on their observations, daily menus enriched with anti-inflammatory foods reduce the risk of depression. According to the researchers, women who followed this diet had 20% less risk of suffering from mental disorder. The explanation is simple: the food called "pro-inflammatory" establish or aggravate a state of inflammation throughout the body including the brain. Now, according to a Canadian study published in the journal Jama Psychiatry in 2015, an inflammation of the brain may explain depression. The brain of a depressed person has 30% more inflammatory markers than that of a healthy person .

According to WHO, over 350 million people suffer from depression worldwide. To limit the risk through his plate, now enrich its diet of fruit, vegetables, seafood, whole grains, nuts and other oilseeds, and certain oils such as rapeseed oil . Limit is however red meats, cold cuts, fried foods, refined grains, pastries, sodas and sugary drinks.
