How To Pack a Healthy Picnic Lunch

Healthy Food for Picnic Time

One of the most popular activities in the summer  is to be outdoors and enjoy a picnic with the family. This article is about how to pack a healthy picnic lunch.  This article includes suggestions for food you can take, quick salads to prepare, and tips about food safety.

A park is the most convenient place to have a picnic. Most have tables, which make it easier to eat and serve the food, particularly if you are using plates and utensils. Many people  have folding chairs and even small tables they can take in the car, but this isn't always possible if you do not have much space. A more casual gathering may involve taking a blanket and eating on the ground.  Generally kids prefer this to picnic tables anyway.

A beach is another great place to have a picnic lunch although they are often quite crowded, particularly on hot days.  Food safety is always important and we need to have good habits to prevent illness.   If you have ever gotten sick from eating food you know how terrible it feels.   Read on for tips on packing healthy food for your outdoor lunch.

Food Safety Tips
The most important thing to keep in mind is that a lot of the food that we typically eat at a picnic will spoil very quickly. Bacteria will multiply rapidly in most food when it is at room temperature, and it grows even faster  on a hot day.

You cannot always know if something is still safe to eat. Of course, it will become obvious eventually. However, people get sick sometimes from eating something that tasted and smelled fine . This is why food safety is so important when packing a healthy picnic lunch.

Our hands normally contain a lot of bacteria. Bringing along a waterless hand cleaner is a good idea, unless you are going to be somewhere that has public washrooms.

Food must be kept cold, and the best way to do this is to carry a cooler. Anything that normally requires refrigeration at home should be kept cold until you will eat. Leftovers should be put away soon after eating. This is easy to forget when we are having fun and visiting with others, but it only takes a minute to repack in a cooler.  It may seem obvious, but toxins will multiply fast and you may not even be aware of it.

If you are taking raw meat to cook on a barbecue, it should be kept separate from other food. If you are taking a lot of meat, the safest option is to pack that in a separate cooler and use another cooler for other food.

Meat should be well wrapped and in a ziplock bag, or a container with a tight lid, so that any juices that may leak will not end up on other food. Use separate utensils for handing the raw meat when you are barbecuing, and not the same ones you will be using to eat your meal. Raw meat has a lot of bacteria.

Planning a Healthy Lunch For the Picnic

A healthy lunch should include protein as well as lots of vegetables, and some fruit. Protein with each meal helps to keep the blood sugar at a good level.  This will keep you from  feeling hungry  not long after eating. Besides meat and fish, protein is in eggs, cheese and yogurt. The salad pictured here is a filling meal, as it has eggs and ham.

However, you don't need to eat meat or dairy to get protein. Other sources include beans, quinoa, tofu, yogurt (particularly Greek yogurt)  and nuts. Raw almonds, walnuts, and pine nuts all add nice favor to salads, or can be eaten by themselves. Seeds such as pumpkin, sesame and sunflower seeds are good choices as well.

Once you have decided on a protein food, you will want to include lots of vegetables. You may wish to cut up raw veggies and eat them with a dip or salad dressing. There are endless possibilities as far as salads are concerned. Almost any vegetable can be eaten raw, and is better for you than cooked as no nutrition is lost. There are lots of varieties of lettuce. The darker it is in color, the more antioxidants and vitamins it contains. You also may want to use spinach or other greens. You will get a lot of vitamins and minerals and fiber with these foods.

Cooked pasta, potatoes and rice can be used as well to make salads.  Red and yellow potatoes are particularly nice to make a salad.

Almost everyone loves fruit, and it has a lot of nutrition. One nice thing about summer is  fruit is in season and can be obtained fresh from farmers markets. It's delicious and great for growing and active kids to eat.

For dessert, you could bring homemade cookies, yogurt or raisins, just to give a few examples.

Some Quick Food Ideas
Quinoa

Quinoa is delicious in a salad. Combine cooked quinoa with cooked squash, sliced zucchini, cherry tomatoes, or other raw veggie that you like. Add parsley, basil or other fresh herb and toss with a vinaigrette.

Pasta

Cooked pasta goes well with tomatoes, cucumber, shredded carrot. It's particularly nice with a sun dried tomato or Italian dressing.

Beans

Beans are healthy and have protein. A variety of your favorites with a zesty vinaigrette will provide a lot of nutrition, and they are a good source of fiber as well.

Eggs

Add more flavor to cooked eggs by cutting in half and sprinkling with paprika and pepper.

Samon and tuna

Canned salmon or tuna can be packed in containers and eaten as is, or with a bun or bread to make sandwiches. Simply mash, add onion and flavorings that you like and just enough mayo to combine. If you use a lot of mayo it will get too wet and a bit mushy.

Finger Foods for Kids

Watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon are all popular items to eat at a picnic. I find it a lot easier to take these items whole, and cut them up just before eating them. They spoil quickly once cut, and even if kept cold they don't taste as good as when eaten fresh.

Watermelon is healthy and has almost no calories, and it is one fruit that almost everyone loves, especially kids.

Kids love finger foods, and there are many healthy ones. Carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes, broccoli florettes, grapes and cherries are some great choices. Finger foods are handy to have around for snacks, particularly if you plan to be gone for several hours.

Items to Pack for a Picnic
Nothing is more frustrating than sitting down to eat and realizing you forgot something important. One thing you may need to include is a manual can opener. You may want to take a can of salmon, for example, and prepare it when you arrive at your destination.

You may also need a bottle opener. You don't want to take a bottle of wine with you, only to discover you can't open it.

Condiments may be necessary if you are going to make sandwiches. Mustard, mayo, ketchup. pickles or pickle relish are items that a lot of people like to have.

You also probably will need utensils of some kind, depending on what you are eating, as well as plates. A knife may be necessary to cut up anything that wasn't prepared ahead of time at home.

Many people use paper plates and plastic knives, forks and spoons so they won't have dirty dishes to take home. This makes it easier and more convenient if you don't want to do dishes when you get home.

If you are taking your own coffee or tea, don't forget mugs. You may need glasses for juice or soda unless you don't mind drinking right from the container.

There are other things you might need that have nothing to do with food when eating outside. These would include a large blanket, folding chairs that fit into the trunk of the car, bug spray, and sunscreen.

Napkins and towels are a must. Hands can get sticky eating fruit like watermelon, peaches and so on. Taking some hand wipes or waterless hand cleaner are convenient when you are outdoors.

Here is the Mercedes of the future

The concept car Generation EQ, unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, represents the future of the electric car from Mercedes.

The shape is classic but elegant, proportions everything was reasonable. On the stand of Mercedes Paris Motor Show in Paris , the concept car Generation EQ could almost pass for a model of the current range. The line of this SUV suggests an evolution of the current GLC and it is primarily the details that betray his pioneering aspect exuberant light signature with great fanfare blue, perfectly smooth grille, no exhaust ... All Generation shows that the EQ has been designed from a to Z as an electric car and it is no coincidence because the label EQ designate in the future all electric Mercedes.

The Generation EQ introduced a platform developed specifically for an electric range, the SUV cut through the sedan. What answer to the offensive launched by Tesla , investing gradually all segments of the automotive market. Two electric engines power the Generation EQ, one on the front and one in back. The power is substantial, with 300 kilowatts or 400 horsepower with a torque of 700 Nm, worthy of a Lamborghini. The 0 to 100 km / h was announced under 5 seconds. Autonomy, in turn, would reach up to 500 km.

A step towards the autonomous car

On board, the Generation EQ gives pride to the touch: the traditional buttons are absent, the perfectly smooth surfaces are preferred.Mercedes promises a real revolution in display, with 3D views of the environment on the navigation system, which is deployed on an extra-large screen.

Finally, Mercedes Generation ensures that the EQ is a step in the direction of the autonomous car, another favorite topic of manufacturers present in Paris. A technology called Car-to-X team concept, which allows it to communicate with other vehicles and with the infrastructure. At first, this may facilitate research stations refills or allow to circulate information about an accident faster. Ultimately, this type of technology is crucial to imagine a generalization of driverless cars.

SWAP: Teen transexual tricked her ex into sex

BLONDE, tall and beautiful, Melanie McPryce proudly shows off her soft feminine curves — every inch a stunning young woman of 18.

On the right, full of laddish mischief and his hair spiked with attitude, Tom McGloan poses for his school photo — a typical tousled 15-year-old on the brink of manhood.
But look closer. Mel and Tom are the SAME person. And the only difference is three years and a sex swap op that produced astonishing results.

Mel, one of the youngest people in Britain to undergo the radical surgery, grinned: "My mum bought it for me on my 18th birthday and it was the best present I could ever have.
"More than anyone she understood the turmoil inside me. I just couldn't go on the way I was.
"The surgeons did the most fantastic job. You can't tell that I was born male — not at all. Even my ex-boyfriend who I split with two weeks ago still doesn't know I used to be a man."
Mum Denise, 50, took out a loan against her house for the op — which cost £12,000 and included a 36C boob job — in Thailand last year.
It ended years of anguish for the little boy called Tom, who knew from the age of five that he wanted to be female.
Heels

Size 10 Mel, from Nottingham, smiles wistfully: "I used to lie in bed wishing I could just click my fingers and be transformed into a pretty little girl.
"I KNEW I was a girl. No question about it. I was interested in girly things like clothes and make-up.
"I looked in every respect like a boy but I just didn't feel like one. At school I didn't have any boy mates, just girls.
"I didn't tell anyone my secret and how I felt. I acted like a lad. I felt I had to, to avoid being bullied.
"My poor mum was really keen for me to join the school football team and was delighted when I asked her for a pair of football boots.
"I couldn't wait to walk up and down our garden path in them. She had no idea that I wanted them so much because the studs felt like I was walking in a pair of high heels. I absolutely loved the click-click sound they made!
"I used to adore dressing up as a girl. I did it in secret. I would come home from school, lock myself in my bedroom and use my sisters' make-up and clothes.
"It made me feel really good. I was pretty and that seemed right. I loved the way I looked in the mirror. I hated having to change out of the clothes and take my make-up off. It was like wiping myself away."
As he grew older Tom became even more confused.
"Although I felt like a girl trapped inside a boy's body, I still had male hormones raging through me — and so I fancied girls," admitted Mel.
"Later, when I was going ahead with the sex change, I thought I would continue to fancy women as I had as a boy.
"I reconciled myself to the fact that I would be a lesbian. But once I'd had the op and started taking female hormones I began fancying men."
By the time Tom was 15 his secret was tearing him apart.
Mel recalled: "I suffered anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder because I was suppressing my true feelings. It was actually Big Brother winner Nadia Almada who inspired me.
"I didn't even realise you could have an operation to change your sex until I saw her on telly. I remember watching one night with my mum. I said to her in a jokey way, ‘What would you do if I was like Nadia?'
"She said she'd accept me whoever I was. I didn't tell her the truth that night. I was scared and I bottled it. But not long afterwards I came clean and told her I wanted a sex-change operation.
"She was shocked — but she was my mum and she supported me. Together we got through it. Telling my mum and the way she reacted made it easier to tell my two sisters and my friends. They were all really supportive. It was a great relief to finally come out.
Wig

"The only person who didn't take the news well was my dad Charlie, who left us when I was four. He disowned me and said if he wanted a daughter he'd have another kid. But since the op he's apologised and we get on fine."
Soon after his big confession Tom left school — and went to college as Mel.
She said: "I purposely chose one where nobody from my school was going. I did a hairdressing course with one of my sisters and started dressing as a girl full-time."
For her first female public appearance she wore a long blonde wig from Debenhams, figure-hugging jeans, furry boots, a borrowed denim jacket and sunglasses.
Mel — who has two sisters, Lyndsey, 31, and Nicky, 29 — said: "I was so excited. It was the first day of the rest of my life. Under my clothes, I'd wear a bra with chicken fillets. I didn't have much money so I borrowed my sisters' bras. They didn't mind."
The following year, she started to make enquiries about a permanent physical change.
She revealed: "I went with my mum to our GP and said I needed some help. My body was changing. I was now shooting up and becoming a young man."
Eventually, Mel was put in touch with a specialist psychiatrist who diagnosed Gender Identity Disorder. He prescribed hormones to make her look more feminine but warned she would have to wait a year till she was 18 for surgery — and a lot longer than that on the NHS.
Mel recalled: "I did loads of research and found there was a really good surgeon in Thailand. It was also a lot cheaper — £12,000 compared to £20,000 here. We had to send him psychiatrist's letters, referrals and pictures.
"In May last year the surgeon gave me the go-ahead. He said he was free on July 26, the day after my 18th birthday.
"I was so happy and excited, but also scared and nervous. My mum took out a loan for £15,000, to cover the operation and travel."
The surgery lasted 10 hours and Mel took five months to heal completely.
She smiled: "Then I could finally look in the mirror and feel like a complete woman. I wanted a new name to go with my new identity so I changed it by deed poll. I chose Melanie McPryce just because I liked the sound of it."
Physically, Mel has experimented as both a man and a woman. She said: "I did have sex as a lad but I didn't enjoy it. I remember wishing I was in the girl's position the whole time."
Since the op there have been two partners. She smiled: "That first time as a woman was very special — as well as being very scary. It felt right, much better than doing it as a man. "My second boyfriend didn't know about my past and I was always worrying he'd be able to tell. But he never could."
Peace

Mum Denise said: "When Mel told me that she wanted to be a girl, it took a lot of getting used to. But I had to help — although I admit I do miss my little Thomas. He was my only son.
"But this is Mel's life. She has to be who she has to be. I just want my child to be at peace with herself and have a wonderful and happy life."
And Mel added: "What Mum did for me was unbelievable. Finally I feel AND look the way I always should have. I am so happy and at ease with who I am. It's what I've always wanted.
"It's great. I even get compared to Cameron Diaz!"
